The Hometown Weekly--
Think: A Mormon
Lake Wobegon
The Hometown Weekly is a collection of humorous and heartwarming stories from an idyllic Utah Mormon town as reported in its struggling newspaper, The Parley's Progress.. It is available in on CDs from live performances. Also in paperback.
Inspired from the stories found in real small-town newspapers, Bruce Lindsay introduces the down-to-earth, foible-filled characters from Parley Grove--folks who can make the mundane mesmerizing and the absurd endearing.
Warm, poignant, and always hilarious, these affectionate vignettes of small-town Mormon life will help you remember who you are and where you're from.
They are available now on CDs and in paperback, wherever LDS products are sold.

LDS Bookcorner Review writes:
"The Hometown Weekly is a side splittingly funny. Lindsay pokes good natured fun at some of our Mormon cultural norms as he examines the lives and experiences of the people in the small town of Parley Grove. In a down-home-on-the-farm style, Lindsay shares each story, making his readers laugh, and perhaps cry a little, but leaving each with a good feeling inside.
"This is an excellent book for any adult but especially the old timers who've been members for a long time. And the antidote for all the 'bad' news we hear every day."

'Might Be From a Place Like Parley Grove
If Third Street was on the edge of town where you grew up, or if the phone book had only one yellow page, you might be from a place like Parley Grove.

Why Care About Small Town Newspapers?
by Terry L. Besser
City people love to make fun of the "folksy" quality of small town papers. They chuckle about items like the following: Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Wombe of Lake Mills are the proud parents of a daughter, Lisa Marie. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Wombe of What Cheer and Mr. and Mrs. Rilley Richter of Keswidk, great-grandparents are... great-great-grandparents are... However, what readers often don't realize is that by reporting the daily life events of local people (more...)

Hometown Weeklies and Family History Research
by Lee Drew
Small town newspapers are always a family researchers' best friend. I've been looking through some old copies of one of these publications for any information on my ancestors.Recently, I found my 2nd great grandfather's obituary published on the front page of a small town paper 80 miles and several large cities north of where he lived.

This book on tape is a delightful listen. It is a series of short stories relating life that takes place in a small (fictional) Mormon Community in Utah.
I think being Mormon makes it even more hilarious, but anybody that grew up in a small community would appreciate the humor of the book. I particulary enjoyed that the author was also the narrator......(more)
